AMD taps into Chinese education market

AMD has entered into a joint venture with a Chinese government-backed educational company to help design and deliver computers for China's educational market. The venture's business name will be Beijing CBE AMD Information Technology Co. Ltd. (ITC JV), pending regulatory approval. The deal should provide AMD with much needed volume.

With the aim to address China’s large and expanding IT education market, the ITC JV is planning to develop three types of hardware platforms including a Student PC, a Teacher PC and a Classroom Server. The platforms are planned to contain AMD silicon crossing all three of AMD’s product lines: x86 microprocessors, MIPS-based™ embedded processors, and Flash memory devices. With a combined focus on education and technology, the ITC JV will strive to provide powerful learning tools for the students, teachers, and classrooms of China. Both parties look forward to future joint developments in China.

AMD's precise involvement, other than that of a supplier, is not yet known. Curiously, the news comes at the same time that AMD has announced the appointment of a Chinese national to head up AMD's operations in the country (they're marketing the fact that she's Chinese, not me). Clearly AMD is working on their Chinese market presence--the potential immediate volume market plus the chance to get the AMD name emblazoned into the heads of youngsters is surely appealing to both AMD and its stockholders.
